Different to the hot Friday, the Moto2-practice and qualifying sessions took place on a cloudy day two at Jerez de la Frontera with slightly cooler temperatures. Also different to the other three race weekends, Saturday’s work did not go as smooth for the Dynavolt Intact GP riders.
Already during the morning it was noticeable that it would not be as easy to secure a starting position on one of the two front rows of the grid this time. But with pace nine Tom Lüthi once again sealed his direct spot in Q2.
During the 15-minutes-short qualifying Tom Lüthi came back to the pit box to get a very fast tyre change. After that the Swiss was able to step it up a notch and improved his time to 1’41.458. In fifth place, he only had two laps left, but then he couldn't go one better and three rivals pushed ahead of him. Despite a gap of only 0.276 seconds Tom Lüthi slipped to eighth position in the third row of the grid.
Tom Lüthi P8 - 1'41.458 (+0.276)
We have to continue to work on the bike. We still haven’t found the right balance yet. The step we did towards the qualifying was good and I got faster. It’s a pity that I am still that far behind. The positive side is that we still have some room with the bike to improve, as we aren’t where we should be yet. I am missing a bit to be fast without having to risk too much. I really pushed hard to the limit today, but that is normal for qualifying. We will now look at the data and analyse it and try to get that extra step to find the right the set up for tomorrow. I still have problems with the last sector; if we can fix that we can also improve on the rest of the track.
